The Older I get the more I am in a contemplative mode like I am in life in review. Looking back I’ve made many mistakes. Some of which I am still dealing with the consequences. When you start embarking on fifty you start realizing you’re in a decline, perhaps even the sunset of your life for many. Time is short, you must be deliberative in your decision making. So as I embark on my 50th birthday and realizing that I will have fewer and fewer opportunities to do things right is the more I want to make sure I am spot on in all of it.
That also includes relationships, especially romantic relationships. Being a follower of Jesus Christ I believe He, God, Jesus is the epitome of love. And Jesus himself called himself the bridegroom and the church His bride. He uses these illustrations to exemplify the level of covenant and relationship he wants to have with his bride. So if you’re embarking on a love relationship with someone this is the example I would recommend.
Paul in his epistle to the church at Ephesus writes in his second letter and illustrates what this relationship should look like. Paul writes this in Ephesians chapter 5:25-33
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
Paul Commands the husband to love their wives using the illustration of how Jesus Loves the body of Christ, and the husband is to sanctify the wife with washing her with the word. He goes on to say that when the two have become one flesh that harming your wife is harming yourself, therefore harming yourself is counterproductive to the goal, of protecting, providing, nurturing and loving. Therefore, we must be deliberative in all that we do as it affects not just you but your better half, In my case it is my better half.
In the coming year, I will once more attempt with all of my might bring these words, the words of Paul into fruition in my relationship with this marvelous woman. I speak about her with glowing words as she is like no one I’ve ever encountered in my life. This love I have and admiration for her has forced me into introspection. Deep dive, I have many faults and I’ve realized some of them are for me to eradicate and the others through submission are for the Lord.
If you are moving towards this decision, remember this in my attempt to be brief, this is not about you, but it is about who you will decide to be for the one you are vowing to be in covenant with.
I hope this blog meets you well
